Perez-Reyes administered pure cannabinoids to research subjects
by intravenous infusion to test the acute pharmacological effects
of these agents on a number of physical systems. One of the
parameters included in Dr. Perez-Reyesgs study was lOP
 response. _0Q/
 _ Dr° Perez-ReyesSs most striking observation was that a
nn-her of cannabinoids played a significant role in reducing
human intraocular tensions. Dr° Perez-Reyes demonstrated that
while delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol (after THC) in isolation could
significantly reduce intraocular pressures several other
cannabinoids also had a profound impact on intraocular

 pressures.501/
Significantly, Dr. Perez-Reyes reported that the lOP=
lowering effects observed on these _alternative cannabinoids n
equaled or surpassed the lOP declines recorded with synthetic
delta_9-THC° For example, Dr. Perez-Reyes reports that
 ll-hydroxy-delta_9-Tetrahydrocannabinol and
 delta_8-Tetrahydrocannabinol are extremely effective intraocular
antihypertensives agents. In fact, delta-8_THC wag superior to
delta-9-THC in lowering intraocular tensions. Moreover0
delta-8-THC is far less psychoactive than delta-9-THC.
 Unfortunately, government officials paid little
attention to the implications of Dr. Perez-Reyeses work.
