The Cases

Alliance for Cannabis Therapeutics v. U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (ACT v. DEA) was a civil lawsuit instigated by the Alliance in an attempt to have the classification of marijuana into "Schedule 1" overturned. (Schedule 1 is for the most dangerous drugs to health, a category which marijuana clearly does not by any stretch of the imagination fall into.)

National Organization for Reform of Marijauna Laws v. U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (NORML v. DEA) was another civil case. I don't know how it was started.

The Drug Policy Foundation v. U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DPF v. DEA) is yet another civil case.

Other cases are mentioned, SOMEBODY WRITE THE DETAILS HERE.

All of these lawsuits ultimately failed to change federal marijuana law, which is still (as of Nov 2001) irrational. This web site contains images of many of the legal documents from the cases, as well as some (relatively poor) OCR scans of them.
